Whenever searching for a brunch spot in SF, I always see Plow on the top 10 listed.  It’s been one of those places on my list for a long time but knowing that they don’t take reservations, it being a small space and usually long waits on the weekends I was a bit deterred from checking it out.   We went on a Friday afternoon hoping to avoid the long wait and though we did have to wait, it wasn’t that bad.  It’s definitely worth the wait as this is now my favorite brunch spot… not only because of the food, but decor is modern but earthy and not pretentious, service is great and parking isn’t bad.

Started off by sharing the sweet corn soup with basil oil ($7) and I must say this was one of the most delicious corn soups I’ve had.  The corn was so sweet and great addition with the basil oil.  Something I will try to make at home.

two pancakes… I should say it’s two delicious lemon ricotta pancakes!  I don’t usually eat pancakes very much because I prefer a savory breakfast and for me it would just be a waste to order a sweet breakfast but these were the perfect size and love the lemon flavor and how airy they were.

This is what I ordered… yeah real healthy right?  Who cares it’s my day off, life is too short.  Who doesn’t like fried chicken?  Chicken was juicy and tender and the Acme torpedo roll was crispy yet soft… I hate it when the bread is too crispy and cuts the roof of my mouth.

If you like bread pudding, you’ll like this.  For me it was quite heavy and filling maybe also due to the fact that I was stuffing my face full of their crispy potatoes… so addicting like they sprinkled crack on them.  They don’t, just saying.

On my next visit, I will definitely want to get the plow breakfast and also try the fried egg sandwich two eggs, cheddar, frisee, aioli, Acme bun ($9.75) add Nueske bacon ($11.75).

Arroz Con Pollo (Cuban Chicken with Rice)

Serves 8

Chicken
3 large garlic cloves
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 teaspoons dried oregano, crumbled
4 chicken breast halves with bone, halved crosswise
4 chicken drumsticks
4 chicken thighs

Rice
3 oz. Spanish chorizo (cured sausage), skin discarded and sausage cut into ¼-inch-thick slices
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 medium onions, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
3 large garlic cloves, chopped
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1½ teaspoons paprika, preferably the hot stuff, plus more to taste
2 Turkish bay leaves or 1 California
1 lb. tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 12-oz. bottle beer (not dark)
1½ cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
2 cups long-grain white rice (14 oz.)
¼ cup drained rinsed bottled pimiento or roasted red pepper strips

Marinate chicken: Mince and mash garlic to a paste with 2 teaspoons salt, then transfer to a large bowl. Stir in vinegar and oregano.

Remove skin and excess fat from chicken, then toss chicken with marinade until coated and marinate, covered and chilled, at least 1 hour.

Cook chicken and rice: – Cook chorizo in olive oil in a 6- to 7-quart heavy pot (12 inches wide) over medium-high heat, stirring, until some fat is rendered, 2 to 3 minutes. Add onions, bell pepper, and garlic and cook, stirring until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add cumin, oregano, paprika, 1 1/4 teaspoons salt, and bay leaves and cook, stirring, 1 minute.

Add chicken with marinade to chorizo mixture and cook, uncovered, over medium heat, stirring frequently, 10 minutes.

Stir in tomatoes, beer, broth, and rice and bring to a boil, making sure rice is submerged. [Deb note: I actually had a really hard time keeping the rice underneath the chicken so that it would cook evenly. I’d suggest that you use tongs to temporarily remove the chicken from the pot, mix the rice in with the other ingredients in the pot, and then replace the chicken, pressing it into the broth a bit before going onto the next step. I will definitely do this next time.]

Reduce heat to medium-low, then cover mixture directly with a round of parchment or wax paper and cover pot with a tight fitting lid. Cook, stirring once or twice, until rice is tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

Remove from heat and let stand, covered, 5 minutes. Discard parchment paper and bay leaves, then scatter pimiento strips over rice.

Note: Chicken can be marinated up to 2 hours.

The weekend brunch crowd was a mix of hipsters and yuppies, with good food but a bit over priced for the portion size.  Wasn’t blown away by the food but would try again since this was our first time.

Beef short rib hash and sweet potato-apple-butternut squash hash, two fried eggs  and creme fraiche.  Immediately when they brought this out to me, I thought damn this portion is small for $14.50!

Pancakes with fruit and berries.  This was delicious especially with the cooked fruit and cream on the side.  Not something I could eat all in one sitting since I like savory food more.

dungeness crab benedict with avocado, hollandaise, orange reduction and potatoes.  In my opinion the best of the three we ordered, but still would only score a 8/10.  The ratio of crab, avocado, egg to english muffin was off… too much bread and not enough egg topping  in each bite.  The addition of the avocado was delicious, but the sweetness of the orange reduction threw me off.  Potatoes were crunchy on the outside and soft inside with some dill sprinkled on top which I really liked.
